Coimbatore, often called the Manchester of South India, is known for its industrial prowess and vibrant culture. But beyond its economic significance, Coimbatore boasts a rich and diverse culinary scene that reflects the essence of Tamil Nadu's traditional flavours and global cuisines. Here's my guide to some of the best food you can savour in Coimbatore, featuring the top 10 restaurants that promise an unforgettable dining experience.
1. Karaikudi Sri Priya Mess
For an authentic taste of Chettinad cuisine, Karaikudi Sri Priya Mess is the place to be. Their thalis are a hit, offering a variety of tastes in one platter. This restaurant is famous for its spicy and flavorful meals (chicken, mutton, prawns and fish). I would also recommend you try the mutton chukka and brain masala as side dishes. The rustic setting adds to the charm, making it a favourite among locals and visitors alike.

2. Haribhavanam
A popular choice for both vegetarian and non-vegetarian fare, Haribhavanam serves a blend of North and South Indian dishes. My favourite dish here is the bun parotta and spicy chicken pallipallayam, aatukal sou. I also would recommend the mutton chukka and mutton biriyani (biriyani is different and they use siragasamba rice).
3. Sree Annapoorna
Sree Annapoorna is a culinary landmark in Coimbatore, renowned for its exceptional South Indian breakfast. Their idlis are fluffy, dosas are crispy, and their filter coffee is a local favourite. With multiple branches across the city, indulging in their consistently delightful offerings is easy.
4. Junior Kuppanna
Junior Kuppanna is synonymous with non-vegetarian South Indian cuisine. Known for their delicious biryanis, mutton chukka, and chicken varieties, this restaurant has a loyal following. The authentic flavours and high-quality ingredients make it a must-visit for meat lovers. Many of the masalas come from their central kitchen and are shipped across locations to ensure the taste is consistent.
5. Cascade Chinese Restaurant
For those craving Chinese cuisine, Cascade Chinese Restaurant offers an array of dishes that are sure to satisfy. From wontons to noodles, fried rice, the menu is diverse and flavorful. The elegant setting and attentive service enhance the dining experience. My favourite here is chicken fried rice with cauliflower Manchurian. They also serve some good Thai and Japanese dishes.
6. Burma Bhai Restaurant
Burma Bhai Restaurant is a hidden gem known for its Parotta and chicken tomato essence curry dishes. The unique flavors and creative presentations make it a standout choice. Despite the name, they sell mostly South Indian dishes and no dishes from Burma. They have been a local favorite for many years and one of my must-haves every time I visit here.
7. Rasanai
Rasanai specializes in traditional South Indian cuisine with a focus on home-style cooking. The restaurant's cozy ambiance and friendly service make it a great place for a family meal. Don't miss their special nool parotta and appam with urulai vengaya kotsu which offers a perfect balance of flavors and textures. They offer a fine dining experience and have set some high standards.

8. The Living Room
The Living Room offers a modern dining experience with a diverse menu that includes Indian, Continental, and Asian dishes. The chic decor and relaxed atmosphere make it a popular spot for brunch, lunch, and dinner. Their fusion dishes and innovative presentations are a treat for the senses. I would probably recommend this as one of my favorite gastro bars in town with a good DJ performing. My favorite dishes here are Podi idlis and kallu kadai prawn roast.

9. Ambur Biriyani
A haven for biryani lovers, Ambur Biriyani brings the famous Ambur-style biryani to Coimbatore. Known for its distinct flavor and tender meat, their biryani is cooked to perfection and served with raita and brinjal curry. My favourite dish here is the mutton biriyani and chicken 65.
10. Valarmathi Mess
Valarmathi Mess in Coimbatore Race Course is a hidden gem for authentic South Indian cuisine. Their standout dishes include the flavorful Nalli fry, Egg kothu parotta, Chicken Kari dosa, pichu potta kozhi, mutton kola urundai, brain fry and kalaki. The cozy ambiance and friendly service make it a must-visit for traditional food lovers.
